Bill Traylor was born into slavery near Montgomery, Alabama, and remained a field hand after gaining his freedom. Traylor began to draw in 1939, at the age of eighty-three. There is no hint of any knowledge of art in his background. He worked on road gangs for a time and in a shoe repair factory. Traylor is one of the most important artists in the twentieth century. His mastery of form is outstanding and his flat imagery and use of space echo African and ancient imagery. Traylor produced over 1500 works in a brief creative period late in his life. |
