Louisiana’s most famous folk artist, Clementine Hunter, did not start painting until she was 57 years old. She worked as a field hand at Melrose Plantation and was “promoted” to working as a domestic in the house. She made clothing and dolls, wove baskets, and made intricate quilts. Visiting artists stayed at the plantation, and Hunter used their discarded paints to create scenes on old window shades. Her themes were plantation workers, religious scenes, and nature. She claimed that her main inspiration came from God and his creations. Her work is hanging in the American Folk Art Museum, The High Museum of Art, among others. Several books have been written about her work. |
