James Harold Jennings was born in Pinnacle, North Carolina. Eccentric and reclusive as a child, he lived with his mother until she died in 1974 and from there moved into a school bus on the property. Jennings made wooden constructions of Indians, Elvis, angels, birdhouses, tough women beating up on men and or the devil, and some very large pieces such as windmills and Ferris wheels. His work is in many museum collections including the The American Visionary Arts Museum. He used to welcome visitors to his home but in his last years found it difficult and upsetting. Concern about his ill health led to his death by suicide in April 1999. |
