Susan Baerwald & Marcy Carsey: Proprietors
Marcy Carsey and Susan Baerwald both come from the television production world, first as network executives and then as producers. Friends for a long time, they decided to indulge their shared passion for American Folk Art by opening a shop that would allow them to have wonderful, whimsical things around them all the time. As a consequence, Just Folk was created in June, 2007 (with a lot of help from their friends). The extensive inventory of Just Folk has been assembled with loving care by Carsey and Baerwald. They have lived with American Folk Art for years in their homes, and are eager to infect others with their enthusiasm for this art form. Their families are both grateful that they have something productive to do, now that they have both reached adulthood (but don’t feel like grownups yet).
Deirdre Gerry, Kathleen Ousley, Fernando Giron
Deirdre Gerry and Kathleen Ousley, also longtime friends through their respective six-year-old sons, are the women who keep Just Folk running, along with veteran antiquarian, Fernando Giron. With backgrounds in art and interior design, the Just Folk staff is adept at advice on placement and home installation. All have commercial experience, which is a great relief to the owners, who are new to the world of retail, but are confident that if they surround themselves with brilliance, they just might produce a successful venture. So far, so good!
Brian Cearnal of Cearnal, Andrulaitus LLP, and his associate, Adam Cunningham, were the
architects and designers of the incredible structure that was created to house Just Folk. Cunningham/Parris Construction (nepotism lives!) were the contractors who won the 2007 Santa Barbara Best New Commercial Project award for their work on the building. Peggy Gouger was involved with interior spatial design. Paul Baerwald is our muse and trusted advisor.
